Webinar Report of «How to apply for a grant of the European Research Council? Strategy application process avoiding pitfalls?» - Kharazmi University

The webinar "How to apply for a grant of the European Research Council? Strategy, application process, avoiding pitfalls?" was held On Wednesday, March 15, 2014, with the presence of more than 60 professors, graduate students and researchers in various fields of science on Kharazmi University online platform. The language of this webinar was English.
At the beginning of the webinar, The Center for European Studies, the field of activities of the departments under their management, as well as the missions, goals and main activities of the center were briefly described by CES coordinator (L. Chehrghani). Further information on these issues is available on the European Studies Center website for further information (www.ces.khu.ac.ir).
After a brief introduction by the Center for European Studies, Professor Franz Neubauer was invited to speak. He stated that the main purpose of the European Research Council (ERC) was to encourage high-quality research in Europe through a competitive fund, outlining the objectives of the Council and noting that European Research Council was particularly interested in encouraging Excellent proposals submitted by researchers from unrelated countries who wish to carry out the project in the EU or related countries. The characteristics and conditions of researchers was provided and the invention of the term "cross-border research" by the ERC was described. Since today the distinction between basic and applied research is sometimes blurred, so this term is coined and applied for the activities of the European Research Council. The council only allocates funds for excellent proposals, and this research can receive these funds for up to 5 years.
Professor Neubauer explained the types of ERC grants, how to start the grant process, the qualifications required to receive a grant, the location of the research, evaluation criteria, etc., and provided explanations on how a project can be funded. He noted that between 11 and 15 percent of the programs are funded, so he explained the two stages of the proposal and its evaluation by the expert board and the important points of these processes. In the following, he introduced some examples of projects that have recently succeeded in receiving funding in the 2021 calls for the audience and presented statistics on the success rate of proposals submitted by various scientific fields in the 2021 programs. On average, the success rate of proposals received a grant are approximately 9.8%.
After the lecture, Professor Neubauer answered the audience's questions.
